Encino High Speed Chase Ends in Head-On Crash with Patrol Car

LOS ANGELES, CA - A male suspect in a stolen car drove at high speed and the wrong way as he tried to elude pursuing police in the San Fernando Valley, but the chase ended when the vehicle crashed head-on into a patrol car as a swarm of officers tried to box in the driver in a Van Nuys neighborhood.

The chase began about 3:10 p.m. near Ventura Boulevard and Amestoy Avenue in Encino, according to Officer Mike Lopez of the Los Angeles Police Department's Media Relations Section.

The pursuit ended about 3:50 p.m. on a cul-de-sac at the end of Keswick Street near Burnet Avenue, where officers in patrol cars cornered the male suspect.

The suspect tried to steer around the police vehicles, but the car he was driving, which appeared to be Chevrolet Volt hybrid, struck the open door of one squad car before colliding head-on with another.

Officers surrounded the car, but when the suspect refused to get out, they appeared to use non-lethal weapons before pulling the driver out and handcuffing him. He was later seen on a stretcher being loaded into an ambulance.
