Police Continue Investigation of Deadly 405 Rollover Crash

VAN NUYS, CA - A homeless man was killed and two others were injured when a car went over the side of the southbound San Diego (405) Freeway in Van Nuys and landed on a homeless encampment occupied by the three men, authorities said Wednesday.

The crash was reported at 6:06 p.m. Tuesday south of Roscoe Boulevard, according to the California Highway Patrol.

A homeless man in his 40s died at the scene. His name was withheld, pending notification of his relatives. Two other homeless men suffered "major" injuries, and were hospitalized, the CHP reported.

The driver, 66-year-old Lionel Johnson of Granada Hills, suffered a minor injury and was taken to a hospital for examination, the CHP reported.

"The investigating officer determined that alcohol/drugs was not a factor" in the crash, the CHP reported. The motorist was not arrested. The cause of the crash remained under investigation.

A stretch of Haskell Avenue near Strathern Street was closed for a time while an investigation was conducted.
