Sodexo's Kwíila Dining Celebrates Opening with Campus Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
Kwíila Dining brings nine distinct culinary stations and a contemporary new gathering space to the growing CSUSM community.
California State University, San Marcos (CSUSM) celebrated the opening of Sodexo's Kwíila Dining and Black Oak Hall with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on Aug. 3, welcoming more than 200 campus partners, students, faculty and staff to explore the university’s newest facilities.
The ceremony included remarks from campus leaders and a blessing delivered by a local Native American representative. Attendees also sampled dishes from each of Kwíila Dining’s nine culinary stations while digital displays showed a time-lapse video documenting the facility’s construction.
Kwíila, the Luiseño word for acorn, reflects the region’s Indigenous heritage and the dining hall’s connection to the surrounding community. Its nine stations—Chopsticks, Stir Fire, Showcase, Sizzle, Spoonful, Mix, Stacked, Rise and Bliss—each offer a distinct culinary experience.
Sodexo Executive Chef Steven Anderson curated the opening-day menu to introduce guests to the range of flavors and dining options available at the new facility. Chopsticks served Chinois salad, while Stir Fire prepared green curry chicken. At Showcase, chefs cooked Little Bangkok lettuce wrap steak on the station’s new mesquite grill.
Guests also enjoyed burger and chicken sliders from Sizzle; chicken noodle and butternut squash soups from Spoonful; mixed berry salad from Mix; and chicken banh mi sandwiches from Stacked. More than 200 guests were served across the stations during the celebration.
The event brought together several university and dining leaders, including CSUSM President Ellen Neufeldt; Deanne Ellison, associate vice president of business development and executive director of the CSUSM Corporation; Leon Wyden Jr., vice president of finance and administrative services and chief financial officer; Sodexo General Manager Paul Reardon; and Anderson.
Eric Cameron, Sodexo district manager, praised the CSUSM Dining Services team for managing a smooth opening and creating an inviting experience for guests. Students attending the ceremony also responded positively to the quality and selection of food offered throughout the dining hall.
The opening of Kwíila Dining expands the university’s campus dining options while providing students with a contemporary gathering place designed around choice, convenience and connection. Located alongside the new Black Oak Hall, the facility will serve the growing CSUSM community throughout the academic year.
