The signing will culminate a process initiated in October 2020 by City Councilmembers who approved forming a Sister City agreement with an international partner. The relationship is designed to develop lasting civic and people-to-people linkages, and promote the exchange of cultural, educational, economic, and social information with communities from other countries that have interests and characteristics complementary or similar to Foster City’s.
Spanning almost seven miles in the southwest prefecture of Tokyo, Japan, Inagi City is home to about 92,000 residents. After incorporation in 1971, Inagi City is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year – likewise to Foster City. Today, it shares similar values to that of Foster City, such as an emphasis on parks and open green spaces throughout its city, as well as the importance of sports and education programs in aiding youth development.
Representatives from the two cities have collaborated over the past year to lay the foundation for formalizing the agreement, which resulted in the creation of the Foster City Sister City Association (FCSCA). The FCSCA serves as the lead contact group for the relationship with Inagi City, and will manage and coordinate associated delegation visits, exchanges and events in the future.
Community members are invited to attend the Sister City signing ceremony in Council Chambers at 6 p.m., Monday, July 26. To watch the ceremony via live broadcast, access the Zoom link https://fostercity-org.zoom.us/j/83531985966 or watch FCTV on Comcast channel 27 and AT&T channel 99.
