Closed Doors, Open Hearts

Central Peninsula Church congregation to help others on "Love Works" day.

On Sunday, a Foster City megachurch will close its doors and open its hearts.

The non-denominational Central Peninsula Church won't be holding regular services this week while its congregation serves the community on its annual "Love Works" day.

The church's approximately 2,000 members will spend a day they'd normally be in the pews feeding the homeless, cleaning up school grounds, delivering gifts to police and firemen, and bringing bag lunches to day laborers, among other activities.

"The list goes on," CPC spokeswoman Helen Richardson said in press release describing the charitable functions her church will perform on its fourth annual community service-directed event.

"What started as an outreach with a handful of projects has blossomed to this year's almost 75 different projects," Richardson said.

The church's mission is to make a difference in the lives of those most in need throughout the Bay Area, an integral aspect of Christianity, Richardson said. She noted that Love Works has opened lines of communication between the church and the communities it serves.

"It has been exciting to see  how the congregation has responded," Richardson said. " Through this unique experience, we can share the love of Jesus in simple, yet powerful, ways and touch the lives of thousands of people in the process.

"We can become the hands and feet of Jesus."
