Foster City Firefighters Help Crews Contain San Mateo Blaze

Officials say the commercial building was under renovation.

SAN MATEO, CA — A fire Thursday night in San Mateo caused roughly $100,000 in damage to a commercial building under renovation, fire officials said.

Firefighters from the San Mateo and Foster City fire departments responded at 8:03 p.m. to a report of smoke coming from the roof of a single-story building at 151 West 20th Ave.

Firefighters found fire in the ceiling and attic area of the building before they called for a second alarm to get more help.

The crews had the fire out in 40 minutes and spent another hour putting out small fires that started as embers were smoldering.

No one was injured and no one was inside the building when the fire started, according to fire officials. The roof and attic were damaged throughout.

Fire officials said the cause is under investigation.
