State Money Earmarked for Foster City’s Green Streetlight Plan

Officials say $747,939 in state money will help the city reach its goal of replacing its entire fleet of streetlights with energy-efficient LED fixtures.

Foster City moved a step closer to reaching its goal of replacing its entire fleet of streetlights with energy efficient fixtures, New Streetlights reports.

Nearly three quarters of a million dollars in state money earmarked to replace the older high-pressure sodium (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures is expected to be available in June.

The California Energy Commission has given preliminary approval to the city’s request for $747,939 to help the city reach its goal of replacing all boulevard and roadway fixtures.

Foster City replaced 260 (HPS) streetlights with LED fixtures last year in a move that reportedly cut the city’s carbon footprint and its annual energy costs by about $18,000.

The city also plans to tap into federal money, New Streetlights reports, with the U.S. Department of Energy’s Energy Efficiency and Conservation Block grant (EECBG) program up for grabs.

“If we receive the EECBG award, our goal is to replace all of the city’s existing HPS streetlights on the city’s boulevards and streets with LED streetlights,” Foster City public works engineer Alan Shu told New Streetlights.
