Murder Conviction In Deadly Appliance Collision

A driver who didn't tie down stolen appliances caused a deadly crash that killed an off duty deputy. Now, he has been charged with murder.

SANTA ANA, CA — A conviction was handed in on Wednesday, for the case of appliances on the 91 freeway and an off duty deputy who lost his life in the bizarre freeway accident in 2006.

Cole Wilkins, the man who failed to properly tie down a load of stolen appliances that prompting a stove to tumble onto an Anaheim freeway and cause a crash that killed an off-duty Los Angeles County sheriff's deputy, was convicted Wednesday of second-degree murder.

Prosecutors said that 41-year-old Cole Wilkins, stole the appliances from an under- construction home on July 7, 2006, and was driving away with them when the stove fell on the 91 Freeway, where Deputy David Piquette slammed into it.
