Knife-Brandishing Suspect Shot To Death By Orange Police

A knife-brandishing suspect flushed out of a van with a firefighter hose was shot to death moments later by an Orange police officer.

ORANGE, CA — An officer involved shooting left a suspect dead on Sunday, according to the Orange Police Department.

A suspect flushed out of a van with a firefighter hose was shot to death moments later by an Orange police officer when he brandished a knife, authorities said Monday.

The suspect, who lived in Orange, had an "extensive criminal history, which included weapons violations and narcotics," according to Sgt. Rob Thorsen of the Orange Police Department.

The officers' interaction with the man -- much of which was captured by a news videographer -- began with an attempted traffic stop for a broken tail light about 11:15 p.m. Sunday, according to Thorsen.

The shirtless driver of the white GMC van initially failed to yield, then pulled over and parked at Katella Avenue and Glassell Street, according to police.

The 33-year-old driver "produced a gas can and a lighter and barricaded himself" in the van, according to Thorsen, who said a license plate check showed an arrest warrant had been issued for the registered owner of the vehicle.

Police decided on the use of a fire hose to "prevent the suspect from setting fire to himself" and to the van, Thorsen said.

The driver got out of the vehicle through the driver's side window, but he "armed himself with a knife," prompting police to try to subdue him with "less-lethal ammunition," which was "ineffective," Thorsen said.

One officer fired a round that hit the suspect in the upper chest area, Thorsen said. He was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival, the sergeant said.

Police did not immediately release the man's name, but his sister identified him to KTLA as Michael Anthony Perez, a father of six who would have turned 34-years-old on Wednesday.
