2 New Coronavirus Deaths In Alameda County Reported Tuesday

ALAMEDA COUNTY, CA — Alameda County reported another two coronavirus deaths on Tuesday, bringing the county's death toll to 15, according to the Alameda County Public Health Department. The county also reported 602 confirmed illnesses, which added to Berkeley's 32, brings the total for Alameda County to 634 confirmed cases.

The East Bay now has its second coronavirus outbreak in a care center. Carlton Senior Living in Pleasant Hill reports COVID-19 cases in four residents and nine staff members. Three of the sick residents are hospitalized. An outbreak at Orinda Care Center in Orinda, announced last week, has now sickened 49.

Deaths in California are approaching 400, with 397 included in the official count by Johns Hopkins University. There are 16,429 confirmed cases in the Golden State, at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Nationwide, New York, New Jersey, and Michigan all have more confirmed cases than California. The total number of confirmed cases in the U.S. shortly before midnight is just shy of 400,000. The U.S. death toll is now 12,910.

All school districts in Alameda County, and much of the Bay Area, officially canceled classes for the rest of the school year.

The University of California said it will provide $2 million in seed funding to scientists across the state to help jump-start high-impact research projects and accelerate urgently-needed breakthroughs to combat the coronavirus pandemic. Meanwhile, Stanford is developing a COVID-19 test that can tell whether a person has been infected and would likely have some degree of immunity.

A shortage of personal protection equipment (PPE) brought on by coronavirus has been tackled head-on by Alameda County firefighters. The off-duty firefighters and family members made face shields for first responders.

In Walnut Creek, a pizza restaurant is donating meals to the two hospitals there, Kaiser Permanente and John Muir, every day during the month of April.
