FREMONT, CA - Two Fremont police officers have been shot and taken to hospital trauma centers, Fremont police spokeswoman Officer Geneva Bosques confirmed at a news conference. 

One of the officers has undergone surgery. He was shot once and is currently in critical condition. The other officer was shot twice and is in stable condition. The identities of the officers have not been released. 

Tactical operations have been taken over by the Alameda County Sheriff's Office, with Newark and Union City assisting. Other agencies have also sent personnel, as reported below. More than 100 officers are involved in the manhunt.

Sgt. Ray Kelly of the Sheriff's Office told reporters that officers are going "yard-to-yard, door-to-door" searching for the gunman. There are homes, apartments and businesses in the search area, which backs up to railroad tracks.

They are utilizing drones, helicopters, tracking dogs, a heat-seeking device and armored vehicles in their search.

Bosques says the shootings began at 1:33 when a patrol officer radioed that a vehicle had backed into him and he was down. Shots were also fired at that location. It's believed that multiple suspects left the scene on foot, splitting up.

Police poured into the area and confronted the suspect believed to have shot the first officer. A detective was shot by the suspect at the second location. The suspect again escaped on foot.

The suspect is described as an Hispanic male, 6' tall, wearing a Giants t-shirt or jersey, gray shorts, with possibly a shaved head. If you see him, call 9-1-1 immediately.

Police have issued a shelter-in-place order for residents in the search area in the Irvington District.

Some streets are blocked in the area.

The BART test track is shut down, but regular BART service has not been affected by the police activity.

In addition, the Safeway store at 3902 Washington Blvd. is locked down. 

The police department initially reported via Nixle that "Several police agencies are within our jurisdiction assisting us at this time. We need to advise citizens to stay out of barricaded areas."
