Burger & Brew Fest Returns To Downtown Fremont

Saturday's event includes "The Burger Throwdown" - a cooking competition between Fremont police, firefighters, city council & supervisors.

FREMONT, CA — After a two-year, COVID-related hiatus, the Fremont Chamber of Commerce is bringing back its 7th annual Burger & Brew Fest Saturday, May 21 from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. in downtown Fremont.

Among the festivities is "The Burger Throwdown," a one-hour, burger-cooking competition between teams from the Fremont Police Department, the Fremont Fire Department, city council members and Alameda County supervisors.

The Burger & Brew Fest will be held at the Downtown Event Center Plaza and along Capitol Avenue, from Liberty to State streets.

The day includes sampling from Bay Area breweries and distilleries, burgers, sliders and gourmet snacks, plus local business booths, art and craft vendors and live entertainment, according to organizers.

And for The Burger Throwdown, festival attendees can cheer on contestants in the challenge, which begins at 12 p.m. at the Event Center Plaza at 3500 Capitol Avenue. (In addition to the one-hour time limit, the contest's only rule: "It's gotta be between two buns!")

Winners receive their names on a trophy and $250 to the charity of their choice.

Burger Throwdown competitors include:

  • Fremont Police Department: Officers Tom Latimer & Mike Gilfoy, cooking for Special Olympics of Northern California;
  • Fremont Firefighters Local 1689: cooking for National Fallen Fire Fighters Foundation;
  • Alameda County Supervisors David Haubert & Jesse Schaa, cooking for the Fremont 4th of July Parade;
  • Fremont city councilmember Rick Jones & Cpt. Matt Snelson, cooking for SAVE, Suicide Awareness Voices of Education.

Judges will be Jasmine Basrai, Fremont Chamber of Commerce chairperson; Oscar Palma of Star One Credit Union, throwdown sponsors; and Phil Woodman, owner of Food Truck Mafia.

Fremont-based Das Brew Inc. and Jack’s Brewing Co. are among participating breweries, along with:

  • 21st Amendment Brewery of San Francisco;
  • Anderson Valley Brewing Co. of Boonville;
  • Altamont Beer Works of Livermore;
  • Bay Boys Brewing of Tracy;
  • Camino Brewing Co. of San Jose;
  • Oakland United Beerworks;
  • Pennyweight Craft Brewing of Livermore;
  • S27 Ales of San Jose;
  • Shadow Puppet Brewing of Livermore;
  • Strike Brewing of San Jose.

Distilleries include:

  • 10th Street Distillery, San Jose;
  • Balcones Distillery, Waco, Texas;
  • Humboldt Distillery, Fortuna;
  • Mezcal Amarás, Oaxaca, Mexico;
  • Mulholland Distilling of Los Angeles.

Food truck line-up, with more added daily by Food Truck Mafia, features:

  • 3 Brothers Kitchen;

  • Fonsecas mexican Foor Truck;
  • Golden Gate;
  • KettleTopia Inc.;
  • Sige Food Truck;
  • Tear It Up Mobile Catering;

Also note that that on Saturday from approximately 5 a.m. to 10 p.m., Capitol Aveue between Liberty and State streets will be closed to traffic, according to Fremont police.
