City Of Fremont Hosts Census 2020 Kickoff Summit

The City of Fremont and Mayor Lily Mei hosted the Census 2020 Kickoff Summit on December 10, 2019 at Fremont City Hall. As Census 2020 approaches, this meeting served as a springboard to present an overview of the importance of Census 2020 for the Fremont community and to provide for a strategy building session between leaders from community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, the business community, and elected officials to ensure that each Fremont resident is counted. Mayor Mei kicked off the Summit with opening remarks and welcomed 40 attendees who represented Fremont community groups and elected officials, including the Fremont City Council, Congressman Rho Khanna’s Office, Fremont Unified School District, the City’s Senior Citizens Commission, Alameda County Library, Afghan Coalition, Eden Housing, CityServe, Muslim Support Network, Pathway Community Church, Bay Area Baptist Church, and more.

The United States Census gives Fremont data about the community, informs the distribution of billions of dollars in federal funding, and determines the number of decision-makers representing our community. Essential services such as healthcare, school programs, housing, transportation, social services, and more could be greatly impacted if the Census count is inaccurate. For every person not counted, the community loses $10,000 over the next ten years. Census 2020 presents new challenges as the first digital Census and an increased public fear of the federal government. The City of Fremont will use the information gathered at the Kickoff Summit to inform Census outreach activities and will continue reaching out to community organizations to serve as a resource and partner when the Census count begins in March 2020.
