Free Gas Offered To Federal Workers Impacted By Shutdown

Some families live paycheck to paycheck and are struggling with being furloughed. Fremont residents are getting help.

FREMONT, CA — Some federal employees continue to work without a paycheck as a monthlong partial government shutdown drags on. Thousands of Coast Guard crew members and TSA workers report to their jobs every day, even though they are no longer being paid. Workers for other agencies simply stay home waiting out the impasse in Washington.

For families living paycheck to paycheck in the expensive Bay Area, the struggle intensifies with each passing day. One Fremont business owner is stepping up to help residents of his community. Ray Olyaie is giving away free gas at his Valero station at 4004 Mowry Ave. People seeking the freebie must show proof that they are a Fremont resident and a federal employee.

His budget for the giveaway is $20,000. He'll keep pumping the free gas until he hits the cut-off.

“I’m hoping maybe other people will do the same thing in another city, so we can help everybody,” Olyaie said in an interview with the San Jose Mercury News on Wednesday.
