FREMONT, CA —Does this quote take your breath away: “People who never thought they'd experience food insecurity are now seeking food assistance,” said Luis Guardia, president of the nonprofit Food Research & Action Center.

Millions of jobs here in California vanished because of coronavirus restrictions and closures. So many workers were just one paycheck away from disaster that the pandemic pushed them over the edge.

Food banks in the seven-county Bay Area now serve more than 1 million people per month — one in seven residents. “If there’s ever been a time in our 35 years to use the word ‘unprecedented,’ this is it,” Michael Altfest of Alameda County Community Food Bank told the Bay Area News Group.
