California Coronavirus: Live Updates On Reopening, Orders, Cases

Here's a roundup of all the coronavirus developments in California as of July 12.

CALIFORNIA — Coronavirus continues to rampage through California. On Friday, Orange County announced 10 new deaths, bringing the death toll to 412, with 49 fatalities this week. More than 50 additional deaths from the coronavirus were confirmed across Los Angeles County Friday. Since the July 4 holiday, 51 people have died in Riverside County due to coronavirus complications and 4,210 new infections have been reported

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday continued to lay out a troubling picture of the coronavirus's resurgence in California, imploring residents to stay home, avoid gatherings and wear face coverings to avoid spreading the virus.

Hospitalizations for COVID-19 have increased by 44 percent over the past two weeks, while the percentage of tests coming back positive in the last week has climbed to 7.1.

The state reported a record number of new cases on Tuesday — 11,694 — although about 2,000 of those were older test results that had been backlogged in Los Angeles County, Newsom said.

Where PPP loans went in California

More than 87,000 California businesses and non-profits have received loans from the Paycheck Protection Program, or PPP, to help pay their employees during the coronavirus pandemic, according to data released this week.

The loans, which varied in amount, were established as part of the federal government's CARES Act and are forgiven as long as businesses keep employees on their payroll, without cutting pay.

In California, more than 4.1 million jobs have been retained thanks to loans of greater than $150,000, according to the SBA. They went to a variety of organizations, from small restaurants to large companies with hundreds of employees.

More counties on watch list after holiday

Meanwhile, coming out of the long holiday weekend, Newsom said Wednesday that 26 counties across California have now been put on the state's monitoring list and must close all bars — along with indoor operations at dine-in restaurants, wineries and tasting rooms, movie theaters, family entertainment centers, zoos and museums and cardrooms.

Last week, there were 19 on the list.

Newsom on Monday said that enforcement efforts in the monitored communities were increased over the weekend. Nearly 6,000 bars and restaurants and bars were visited by the Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control. More than 440,000 other businesses were contacted in some manner by the Department of Industrial Relations and Division of Occupational Safety and Health.

Overall, 52 citations were issued, Newsom said.

"There were only a handful of citations because the overwhelming majority of restaurants... and bars that were allowed to open... were in compliance," he said.

However, the state's coronavirus cases continue to climb at a rate of concern, he said. In just two weeks, the positivity rate has risen from 4.9 percent to 6.8 percent.

Virus-related shutdowns kept millions of Californians indoors over the Fourth of July weekend, a period typically marked by outdoor barbecues and fireworks shows.

The virus's resurgence has forced some counties to reverse course on their reopening plans by shutting down indoor dining and other amenities.
