A Fremont Rancher's Battle With City Officials Over Fence Continues: Report

The issue over county property appeared to be settled last year, but now Fremont officials are disputing the rancher's fence.

FREMONT, CA — The fight between a bison rancher and Fremont officials over an electric gate recently installed along a rural section of the city, according to a report from the Mercury News.

The dispute started years ago when rancher Christopher George fought with county, local, and district officials for control of a 1,000-foot section of Morrison Canyon Road, a rural roadway that leads to his property and Vargas Plateau Regional Park, according to the Mercury News.

When the Alameda County Board of Supervisors finally granted George responsibility over that stretch of roadway in October 2025, he quickly put up a gate, according to the report.

Now, Fremont city officials are demanding that George have the fence torn down, according to the report, claiming it is violating city code by obstructing the use of a public street, according to the report.

But George is refusing, and his attorney argues that Fremont has no jurisdiction over the fence because it is built on private land, according to the report.
