Fremont students host sheet mulching party, transform school yard
115 American High School students and volunteers hosted a sheet mulching party to celebrate the school's new mural and green tradition.
Last weekend, student leaders at American High School in Fremont joined forces with StopWaste and community volunteers to host a sheet mulching party to celebrate the school’s new compost-themed mural and lay the literal groundwork for their soon-to-be eco-friendly school yard.
Science and Eco Club students and volunteers – 115 community members in total – sheet mulched 4,000 square feet of the school’s front lawn, making space to plant a drought-tolerant landscape which the students will nurture by hand until the rainy season. Fremont mayor Lily Mei even stopped by to celebrate these youth taking action to make a difference in their school and their community.
StopWaste continued its partnership with the Science and Eco Club by recreating the “Food Cycle” through various tabling stations set up during the event, where community members got the chance to learn more about ways to reduce food waste. (Last year, the groups piloted a successful food share table program together in the school’s cafeteria.)

The event and renovation took place in front of American High’s expansive entry-way mural, painted by local artists Desi Mundo and Pancho Peskador and themed to encourage the community to compost their food scraps.
