Habitat for Humanity Fremont Development: Groundbreaking Friday
Central Commons will provide 30 affordable homes in Fremont.

FREMONT, CA — Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley will hold a groundbreaking ceremony this Friday, July 14, for the 30-home Central Commons development in Fremont. The project was approved unanimously by the Fremont City Council way back in October 2014.
“Fremont continues to be a leader in affordable housing,” said Fremont Mayor Lily Mei. “Our city values diversity, and part of that is working to ensure housing options to allow people to live in our community. Through creative partnerships such as the one with Habitat for Humanity/East Bay Silicon Valley, we are pleased to be able to add 30 new homes to Fremont’s affordable housing inventory.”
Central Commons will be a vibrant community, featuring high quality, energy-efficient condo-style homes with several different floorplans. The complex will include private decks and balconies, a large community area, and garage parking with added storage.

Central Commons will be located at 4369 Central Avenue, so future homeowners will have quick access to BART, Altamont Commuter Express (ACE), AC Transit, Interstate 880, and Interstate 680.
Habitat for Humanity East Bay/Silicon Valley is now in the process of selecting applicants to purchase the homes. Qualified buyers can earn up to 80% of Area Median Income (AMI) and must be willing to invest the necessary hours of “sweat equity” in home construction. “We are excited to work with the City of Fremont to bring this project to life,” said Habitat EBSV President & CEO Janice Jensen. “Central Commons is more than just affordable housing -- it’s the opportunity for families to own a home, put down roots in a community, and lay a foundation for economic security that can last generations.”

Speakers at the groundbreaking will include Fremont Mayor Lily Mei, State Senator Bob Wieckowski, Assemblymember Bill Quirk, representatives from key development sponsors such as PG&E, and a current Habitat homeowner.
“California has a severe affordable housing crisis, especially in the Bay Area,” said Wieckowski, a member of the Senate’s Transportation and Housing Committee. “I support an array of housing programs to meet our affordable housing needs, and I am pleased that 30 families will soon be able to call Central Commons home.”
The ceremony will start at 10 a.m.
