The pea-sized hail occurred for about a minute around 8 a.m. and the chance of hail will continue today in the Bay Area, weather service officials said.

Forecaster Steve Anderson said any hail today shouldn’t cause any property damage. Anderson said the chance of hail Friday is zero.

A low-pressure system in the upper level of the atmosphere over California combined with unstable air in the atmosphere caused the hail, Anderson said.

He said droplets of water rise up into a cloud where the droplet freezes. The ice particle drops in the cloud and air currents bring it back up until the air currents can no longer hold the particle and it falls to the ground as hail, Anderson said.
