Minimum Wage Increases In Fremont Next Month

FREMONT, CA — Some Fremont workers' pockets will be slightly fuller this summer as the city's minimum wage is set to increase on July 1.

The current minimum wage in the city is $17.75. The new wage will increase by 30 cents to $18.05.

The city has increased its minimum wage each year, adjusting for inflation, since 2019, when its city council approved a new ordinance mandating a $15/hour minimum wage.

Nonprofit workers, however, are exempt from the ordinance "to avoid a reduction in the valuable services they provide to the community," according to city officials.

"To prevent inflation from eroding its value, the minimum wage will be adjusted by the local consumer price index annually," city officials said.

The new minimum wage in Fremont would put it just over a dollar higher than California's, which was increased to $16.90 an hour earlier this year.

Both fast food and health care workers, however, have higher minimum wages in the Golden State. Since April 1, 2024, fast food workers at qualifying companies must be paid at least $20 an hour.

California has one of the highest minimum wages in the country, more than double the federal minimum wage of $7.25 an hour, which is used by 20 states.
