FRIDAY, FEB. 24, 6:54 a.m.

A female body found along Alameda Creek Thursday evening may be that of 18-year-old Jayda Jenkins, who went missing after her vehicle crashed into the water off Niles Canyon Road Jan. 21, according to police.

The body has not yet been identified, but Alameda County sheriff's deputies have notified Jenkins' family of the discovery, according to police.

The find was reported to dispatch at 5:34 p.m. after a male caller found the body near the creek's water, close to Coyote Hills in the Ardenwood area.

Officers responding to the scene found her remains on the north side of the creek, between the water and the levee trail. She appears to have been in the water and exposed to the elements "for some time," police said.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office and coroner's bureau are handling the case, police said.

Jenkins' silver Honda Accord careened off Niles Canyon Road after striking a white Honda in the accident, deputies said. Her vehicle was recovered, however, the body of the teen, who is from Tracy, was not inside and was never found as the search was hampered by fast-moving waters of Alameda Creek, running high after several storms. The search involved personnel from the sheriff's office, Fremont police and fire departments, the CHP and the East Bay Regional Park District, among other agencies.
