School Board Approves New Teacher Contract

The new contract will give local teachers their first raise since 2007.

The Fremont Unified School District’s Board of Education has approved a new three-year contract with the Fremont Unified District Teachers Association, officially ending a more than yearlong dispute.

According to the Fremont Bulletin, the new contract was adopted at the school board’s June 12 meeting, after FUDTA’s 1,650 members ratified the contract last month. The teachers voted about 85 percent in favor of the new contract.

The new contract is the first three-year agreement in about a decade, FUDTA President Brannin Dorsey told the Bulletin.

Under the new contract, teachers will receive a one-time 4 percent payment for the 2012-13 school year and a 1.5 percent raise in the 2013-14 school year. Teachers may also receive a possible additional 0.5 salary bump if the district receives additional funds from the state.

The new contract also requires that secondary class sizes be staffed at no more than a 27.5 student to 1 teacher ratio.
