Season's Final by Mission Peak Wind Symphony, May 27 @ Chabot
Highlights of the concert: Godzilla Eats Las Vegas by Eric Whitacre, and Winter Blossoms by Dr. Xi Wang. Director: Travis Nasatir
Come join Mission Peak Wind Symphony (MPWS) for a fun-filled evening as it delivers the season’s second concert at Chabot College, Hayward, on Sunday, May 27, 2018.
As a member of the World Association for Symphonic Bands and Ensembles Commissioning Consortium, MPWS is proud to present a commissioned composition titled Winter Blossoms. This new release was written in grief by Dr. Xi Wang to honor her teacher and Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Steven Stucky, whose sudden passing had shocked the musical world. The rendition by MPWS celebrates the first public performance of Winter Blossoms in California.
The audience may then expect to savor the unexpected when Godzilla Eats Las Vegas--- a wild ride of music and screenplay complete with sound effects and an army of Elvis impersonators in response to the unnatural disaster. Share in how composer Eric Whitacre turned his frustration into hilarity having spent seven years to get his bachelor’s degree from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas! In his words, “The idea that this piece is being played all over the world in such serious concert venues is the single funniest thing I have ever heard!” Here hysterical laughter becomes the inevitable outcome!
