Sen. Wieckowski Earns Award For Environmental Stewardship

FREMONT, CA – Senator Bob Wieckowski (D-Fremont) this week was given the 2018 Environmental Stewardship Award from the Mattress Recycling Council and the Bye Bye Mattress Program for his commitment toward protecting California’s environment and strengthening statewide recycling efforts.

The Environmental Stewardship Award recognizes California legislators who exemplify environmental stewardship.

“Sen. Wieckowski has been steadfast in his commitment toward protecting California’s environment and natural resources. He has a proven track record of leading recycling initiatives and supporting sustainable practices in the state,” said MRC Managing Director Mike O’Donnell. “This award reflects Sen. Wieckowski’s accomplishments as a local and state environmental leader and his dedication toward reducing California’s environmental footprint.”

Wieckowski, who represents area residents including in Milpitas, Castro Valley, Fremont, San Leandro, Hayward, Union City and Newark, chairs the Senate Standing Committee on Environmental Quality, which reviews all legislation relating to the environment and waste management. He also served as the chair of the Senate Budget Subcommittee on Resources, Environmental Protection, Energy and Transportation.

In addition, Wieckowski authored legislation to help streamline California Department of Resources Recycling and Recovery (CalRecycle) processes.

The award was presented during a July 19 ceremony at the Senator’s Fremont District Office.

About Mattress Recycling Council and Bye Bye Mattress: The Mattress Recycling Council was formed by the mattress industry to operate recycling programs (known as Bye Bye Mattress) in states which have enacted mattress recycling laws – California, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Since its inception in 2016, the program has recycled more than 2 million mattresses in California through a network of partnerships with local governments, solid waste facilities, nonprofit organizations and small and minority-owned businesses throughout the state.
