Sick of Commuters Cutting Through Fremont?

The City is working on controls to keep them off local streets and on highways designed for them.

FREMONT, CA — You may have noticed new turn restrictions on Fremont streets that went into effect on Monday. Those restrictions aren't aimed at you - they're designed to keep the Tri-Valley people who commute to and from Silicon Valley every day out of local neighborhoods.

Phone apps that help people avoid backups shift those commuters onto city streets, creating congestion for Fremont residents just trying to get home or run errands. It's gotten so bad that some people try to stay off the roads altogether during commute hours.

  • Mission Boulevard/I-680
  • Paseo Padre Parkway/Washington Boulevard/I-680
  • Mowry Avenue/Mission Boulevard/Niles Canyon

The peak-period turn restrictions pilot program for cut-through streets is just part of the City's overall plan.
