Gilroy Rotary Club Raises $7,000. to Support Immediate Needs
Funds support GUSD and St. Joseph Center
When the coronavirus hit in mid-March, the Gilroy Rotary Club wasted no time setting up a process to raise funds to help. Club President Mark Turner said, “As Rotarians, we knew it was our duty and responsibility to become a part of the solution during the COVID crisis.
We began a relief fund and worked with local schools and non-profits to determine their needs. This is one small way we can become engaged.” And members of the club stepped up in a big way. Within a few weeks of opening up the funding site on the club’s homepage, $7,000. was raised to address the immediate needs of the community. After discussion with the club membership and the board, $5,000 went to GUSD to purchase Chromebooks for students to assist with distance learning needs. This week, the remaining $2,000 will be donated to the St. Joseph’s Center to use as needed to serve residents of the Gilroy community.
“The response of the Gilroy Rotarians was not surprising”, said in-coming Gilroy club president Kathleen Rose. “The value of being a Rotarian is demonstrated through our commitment to service and compassion in big and small ways.”
