
A driver who died today when his vehicle crashed into tree on U.S. Highway in Gilroy, injuring his passenger, was 25-year-old Louis Torres, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner’s office.
Torres was a resident of Los Banos, an employee of the medical examiner’s office said.
The California Highway Patrol received a report at 6:02 a.m. of the crash on northbound Highway 101 at Leavesley Road near the Gilroy Premium Outlets mall in Gilroy, officers said.

Torres was driving with the passenger when for some reason he turned off of the highway and smashed into a roadside tree, the CHP said. He died at the scene while the passenger was taken to a hospital with minor injuries.
The cause and further information about the crash was not immediately available from the CHP today.
