Last Chance to Apply for Sign Ordinance Review Task Force

Gilroyans interested in becoming part of a team established to review and amend the city's sign ordinance have until July 10 to apply.

Recruitment is now open, though only until July 10, for Gilroyans interested in joining a team tasked with reviewing and amending .

There are currently seven openings on the 11-person Sign Ordinance Review Task Force. Two of the team's members, city councilmen Dion Bracco and Peter Arellano, have already signed-up, along with a planning commissioner and a Chamber of Commerce representative. 

The city is seeking applications from residents and local businesses in the following professional and civic sectors:

  • One real estate representative
  • One representative from a downtown business
  • One representative from a First Street business
  • One representative from an auto dealership
  • One representative from a furniture store
  • Two Gilroy community members at-large

The focus of the task force, according to the application guidelines, is to review the current sign ordinance for recommended revisions. Topics for evaluation will include:

  • Off-site residential open house signs
  • Flags, balloons and streamers
  • A-frame/portable signs
  • Banners
  • Temporary signs affixed to vehicles
  • Window signs exceeding 15 days and/or 25 percent of coverage

Each of these signs, and many more, are prohibited or restricted under the current sign ordinance, though they have been until the task force completes its work.

Team members will meet in open public meetings during the evening at least once a month, but no more than every two weeks, with the goal of completing the assignment in six months, the guidelines state.

The  will interview and appoint applicants on Monday, July 16 at 6 p.m. in the city council chambers.

Applications are available online and must be submitted by email, mail or in person no later than Tuesday, July 10 at 5 p.m.
