Long-Serving Gilroy Mayor Don Gage Resigns

GILROY, CA - Gilroy Mayor Don Gage announced during a City Council meeting Monday night that he would resign effective at the end of this year.

Gage’s resignation could end a long career in local politics. Born and raised in Gilroy, he first joined the City Council in 1981 and stayed there for the next 10 years.

He then was elected to mayor for his first stint, which lasted from 1991-1997. He went on from there to become a Santa Clara County supervisor from 1997-2010, joined the Santa Clara Valley Water District from 2010-2012, and returned to his post as mayor of Gilroy in 2011.

His resignation will be effective Dec. 31. At its Jan. 4 meeting, the City Council will appoint an interim mayor until Gage’s current term ends at the end of 2016.

The interim mayor will be chosen from the City Council, creating a vacancy on the council. The council will appoint a new member at its Jan. 25 meeting.
