McAbee Beach Closed Until Further Notice
"Petroleum-like substance" leaking in the Cannery Row area.
A beach in Monterey has been closed due to an apparent leak of a “petroleum-like substance” in the area, city officials said Thursday.
The city has closed McAbee Beach, near Cannery Row, on the recommendation of the Monterey County Health Department. City staff having the material tested to see what it is and trying to determine where the leak came from so they can stop it, according to city officials.
They say the leak is apparently confined to the cement foundation of a former building at that site, but the beach will remain closed until further notice.
