Office Worker Abruptly Quits; County Registrar Calls For Election Review

The Santa Clara County Registrar of Voters said Friday she is asking for the Secretary of State to conduct a review of Tuesday’s election results after an IT worker in the office abruptly resigned on the eve of the election.

Joseph Le quite his post as IT Manager on Monday, according to Registrar of Voters Shannon Bushey.

Bushey called for a state-led investigation to assure residents they can be confident in Tuesday’s election results, she said.

“We have been proactively reviewing our processes and systems and are confident that everything is in order,” Bushey said in a statement. “But, it is not enough for us to be confident, the public needs to know whether this personnel matter has impacted the integrity of the county’s election process.”

Bushey said her office has not commented on Le’s resignation because state law prohibits the disclosure of personnel information.

But, she said “rumors and speculation abound” about the incident. The Registrar’s Office is on pace to complete the count of vote-by-mail ballots this weekend, Bushey said.

An estimated 150,000 ballots were dropped off at the polling places on Election Day.

Of those, roughly half have been counted, and Bushey said she expects the remaining votes to be tallied by Sunday evening.
