📰 News we're reading

• Judge extends halt on Gilroy ICE facility construction, promises ruling within a week (missionlocal.org) — A federal judge has temporarily halted construction of a new ICE detention facility planned just outside Gilroy, giving herself a week to decide whether to issue a longer injunction. The project, on former agricultural research land, faces a lawsuit from California and Santa Clara County over alleged failures to consult the community and assess environmental impacts, potentially reshaping how local governments challenge similar facilities.

• Labor Day Car Show held for third year (benitolink.com) — A Gilroy resident was among the many classic car enthusiasts enjoying Campbell Auto Sales' third annual Labor Day Car Show on Sept. 7, which featured about 60 vintage vehicles. Visitors took in food vendors, music, kids' activities, and raffle prizes, while Gilroy's Martin and Connie Saldivar showed off a favorite 1962 Chevy Impala.

• ICE Bans Hugging Inside California's Largest Detention Center. Families are Fighting Back (parriva.com) — A Gilroy father of two held at California's largest ICE detention center says a strict no-contact visitation policy keeps him from hugging his wife and children, deepening their sense of isolation. Families and advocates have launched the "Hugs Beyond Bars" campaign, arguing that carefully managed contact visits would preserve basic human connection without compromising security at the remote California City facility.
