Soberanes Fire Latest: Day 27 With Scorched Terrain Expanding Overnight By Roughly 700 Acres

Containment still holding at 60 percent.

MONTEREY COUNTY, CA – The Soberanes Fire in Monterey County has burned through 76,683 acres as of this afternoon, up from 76,016 acres on Tuesday, with containment still holding steady at 60 percent, Cal Fire officials said.

Full containment is estimated by the end of the month.

The massive blaze, started July 22 by an illegal campfire, caused closures this week of stretches along Highway 1. Those orders have since been lifted, officials said. More details on road closures and evacuations here.

As of today, there are 3,067 firefighters working to extinguish the fire, which has killed a private contractor operating a bulldozer and injured three other workers, according to Cal Fire.

The large wildfire has destroyed 57 homes and 11 outbuildings. It has also damaged three structures and two outbuildings, according to Cal Fire. The fire is also threatening 410 structures.
