Suspect Arrested In Deadly Shooting At CA Councilwoman's Home

A shooting at a Gilroy councilwoman's Halloween party left one dead and two others with life-threatening injuries on Saturday.

GILROY, CA — Police arrested a man Sunday in connection with a shooting that unfolded at a Gilroy councilwoman's Halloween party early Saturday morning. The shooting left one person dead and four others injured. Two people were in critical condition, police said.

Police served a search warrant on Saturday at a home on the 7100 block of Church Street in Gilroy, where they arrested 19-year-old Gilroy resident Benjamin David Calderon in connection with the shooting.

On Saturday around 12:55 a.m., police received a 911 call of a shooting on the 400 block of Los Animas Avenue in Gilroy, the residence of Gilroy City Council Member Rebeca Armendariz, the Gilroy Police Department said in a statement on Sunday. After arriving at the large outdoor party, officers learned that an altercation had escalated into a shooting at the gathering.

At least one suspect fired a gun, killing one person and sending four others to the hospital — two with life-threatening injuries, police said.

"I am thankful that my family and I, who live on Las Animas, were not hurt in this tragedy, and I pray for those whose loved ones have been touched by what has occurred," Armendariz said in a statement, according SF Gate. "In the meantime, we are giving our full cooperation to the Gilroy Police Department in this investigation. Our primary concern is for the individuals impacted and their families. We hope the Gilroy community will come together with love and support for those touched by yesterday’s events at the appropriate time."
