Partnering agencies in the Avoid the 100 DUI Campaign have revealed final statistics in the Christmas and New Year's DUI checkpoint and patrol efforts.
From Friday, Dec. 31, 2013 to Jan. 1 of this year, authorities have arrested 2,268 drivers on suspicion of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in a combination of checkpoints, special saturation patrols and routine patrols in Los Angeles County, authorities said.
The same time last year, 2,168 alleged DUI drivers were arrested, authorities said.
More "Avoid the 100" operations are planned during Super Bowl Sunday coming in February and again during St. Patrick's Day, authorities said.
"DUI checkpoints, along with regularly scheduled high visibility DUI enforcement operations, are proven strategies for removing impaired drivers from the road and heightening awareness of the dangers of driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, sobriety checkpoint programs can yield considerable cost savings: $6 for every $1 spent," authorities said in a written statement.
