Citrus College Study Abroad: Azusa Student Transformed in Japan
Citrus College is committed to helping students discover their passion, as well as realizing their academic and professional goals.

Citrus College student Jackie Alba always considered herself indifferent toward education. The Azusa resident paid attention if a class interested her, but had difficulty finding passion for a subject. This made studying and connecting with classmates difficult. Jackie began questioning her future at Citrus College.
Everything changed when Jackie discovered a flier from the Citrus College Study Abroad program inviting students to travel to Japan. She had never visited a foreign country without her family, but the idea of earning college credit in Japan sounded promising. Jackie wondered if the trip could be an opportunity to reinvent herself.

That summer, Jackie found herself on the other side of the Pacific. In Kyoto, she was struck by how tradition and respect informs daily routines and interactions with Japanese society. Her observations in both the city and countryside were enhanced through courses she took with Dr. Senya Lubisich, a Citrus College history and humanities instructor, who joined the students in Japan.
When Jackie returned to Citrus College, she felt the trip had changed her. Eventually, this change reflected in her studies – she now pursues her academic goals with tenacity. Jackie is currently a biology major and has aspirations of working as a lab technician. When asked about her transformation from lackluster to determined student, Jackie pointed to her experience abroad:

"The amount of pride the Japanese have in whatever they are doing is absolutely inspiring," Jackie explained. "After living in their society for a month, I was motivated to improve my own work ethic. Now, I enjoy studying, and I have dramatically improved my grades. In many different ways, I take great pride in my work."
As Azusa's representative on the Citrus Community College District Board of Trustees, I am pleased to share this story about the college's study abroad opportunities. Unlike the majority of other community colleges, Citrus College offers two different travel options. The first occurs during four-week sessions, offering students a more affordable route; the second is an entire semester in another country, allowing students to immerse themselves in foreign cultures. The number of locations offered through the program is also greater than most other programs. For students with financial need, the college's study abroad coordinator consistently helps them secure available grants and scholarships.
While Jackie's experience is incredible, it is just one example of the life-changing education provided at Citrus College. Some students find inspiration in their general education courses, while others challenge themselves through student leadership opportunities. For others, like Jackie, the Citrus College Study Abroad program is where everything clicked. Whatever it may be, I am proud that Citrus College is committed to helping students discover their passion, as well as realizing their academic and professional goals.
