Field Renovations Coming To GHS

Varsity baseball field could see some much-needed improvements soon.

The Glendora Unified School District voted to begin the preliminary work on construction improvements to the varsity baseball field at Glendora High School.

The board voted to fund $25,000 to have construction company Byrom-Davey begin designing the improvements being considered for the varsity field. Two donors in the community are also willing to put up a combined $200,000 towards the cost of construction, school officials said.

Construction is planned on commencing during summer break of this year. The work could be finished within two months, said Chuck Gomer, board president.

Some of the improvements to the field include reconstruction of the "horse shoe" and a new backstop, synthetic turf, improved field drainage and protective netting. Fixing portions of the infield will also allow for improved regulation play, officials said.

Officials must still work to ensure the construction plans are examined and approved with the Divisions of State Architect, a state entity which provides oversight for the design and construction of K-12 facilities. A final agreement cannot be entered into until the DSA gives its approval to the design plans, officials said.

"The one known factor is the construction time is about two months for this type of project. The unknown factor is the DSA review," said Eric Jennings, vice president of Byrom-Davey.

The district is not financially obligated to move forward with the project beyond the design phase, but the board approval of the design agreement and a companion lease agreement could help spur the next phases of the project.

The two donors from the community at this point wish to remain anonymous, Gomer said.
