Mount Baldy Avalanche: Injured Victim Airlifted, Fire Officials Say

BREAKING: An avalanche left at least one severely injured. An injured hiker was airlifted from the popular Mount Baldy Bowl area.

GLENDORA, CA — An avalanche on Mount Baldy in the San Gabriel Mountains left at least one person severely injured, according to San Bernardino County Fire Department Information Officer Eric Sherwin.

Air Rescue 7 arrived to find three people injured on the mountainside. One person was immediately airlifted from the avalanche site, and a second was hoisted and transferred to ground crews for transport to local hospitals, Sherwin said. Their condition was not immediately made known.

The avalanche was initially reported at approximately 12:30 p.m., according to Sherwin.

"A hiker was stuck half-way down the Mount Baldy Bowl," he said. "He went down with the slide."

The confirmed victim was reported to have serious injuries and was located in the area of the Mount Baldy Bowl, according to SBCF.

The popular Mount Baldy Bowl Trail is just north and west of the Mount Baldy Ski Lifts in San Bernardino County mountains and is in the U.S. Forest Service Angeles National Forest. There is no current information how the injured person arrived at this location or how the avalanche occurred.

Air Rescue 7 hoisted the injured party off the avalanche site, and flight medics were with that victim at approximately 2 p.m.

As of 2:15 p.m. all of the injured people were off the face of the mountain.
