Coastside New Leaf Customers Select Envirotoken Beneficiaries
New Leaf has donated over $700,000 to Central Coast groups since it launched the Envirotoken program.

Six local nonprofit organizations have been selected as beneficiaries of New Leaf Community Markets’ Envirotoken program for the next six months. Every time New Leaf customers reuse a shopping bag, they receive a token worth 10-cents to direct to one of the beneficiaries. Customers voted on a roster of organizations, and the six with the most votes were selected: Coastside Hope, Coastside Land Trust, Coastside State Parks Association, Friends of Fitzgerald Marine Reserve, Surfrider Foundation San Mateo Chapter, and The Heal Project.
“We are grateful for New Leaf Community Market’s many years of support for Coastside Hope and other local non-profits,” said Fatima Soares, Executive Director, Coastside Hope. The Envirotoken program keeps our name in the public eye and provides an easy way for our neighbors to show their support. The funds received are used to support our safety net programs that help more than 3,000 Coastsiders every year.”
A ten-cent per token donation is small, but over time donations add up. Since New Leaf introduced the Envirotoken program in 1993, New Leaf has donated over $700,000 to Central Coast groups based on customer reusing bags seven million times. New Leaf was the first in the region to launch a program to encourage grocery bag reuse; many other area retailers have followed suit.
