Freestyle Motocross Stunt Shows Returning to the Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show

Organizers are bringing back electrifying freestyle motocross shows, monster truck rides, unimotorcycle drag racing to the big April 26 show

Sick. Insane. Awesome. The sickest, most insanely awesome show ever. No superlative goes too far when it comes to the back-flipping, high-flying, self-immolating daredevils of RockStar/Metal Mulisha freestyle motocross team.

And they’re back in a big way, guaranteed to spike your adrenaline like an IV drip of pure caffeine at the 25th annual Pacific Coast Dream Machines Show, Sunday, April 26 at Half Moon Bay Airport.

For the uninitiated, freestyle motocross, aka FMX, is like Olympic freestyle snowboarding. Except there are wheels. And a gas-powered engine. And sometimes the rider is on fire. On purpose.

“Oh yeah,” laughs Lloyd Massey, Executive Director of WGAS Motorsports. “Monster air, back flips, fire…doesn’t everybody’s job include stuff like that?”

Leading the charge at Dream Machines is Jimmy “Fitz” Fitzpatrick, a 20-something phenom known the world over, and a true rock star of the X Games. He’d like you to believe he’s beyond tough. He lists hunting, fishing, and bar fights among his hobbies.

But once upon a time, little Jimmy was far more refined. In fact, he was a high diver. Diving? You mean, instead of scarred motorcycle leathers, he wore…a Speedo?

Indeed, Fitz was a diver. So good, in fact, he became a Junior Olympian. Until his family moved to a vineyard in Temecula, where he built a few dirt bike jumps in the back yard. And heard the wild call of FMX.

The expertise learned at a diving board – concentration, courage, and gymnastics – carried over seamlessly to the world of FMX. It is those skills, combined with a love of the adrenaline rush, which have catapulted him to the heights of his profession.

“One nice thing to note about Fitz is that, even though he is now world-famous in this sport, he’s retained his humility,” notes Massey of WGAS. “John Borba, who founded WGAS 40 years ago, gave Fitz his first professional event. Fitz has never forgotten that. To this day, when John wants him for an event, he’s there. He is truly one of those guys who remembers where he came from.”

Nice work if you can get it. But Massey stresses that it’s not all fun and games.

“You have to remember that every time they ride, they put their lives on the line. One small mistake can mean bruises, maybe some blood, even broken bones. One big mistake can mean something far worse. So they dedicate themselves constantly to their fitness and riding skills.”

He cites Derek Garland as a good example. “When he isn’t riding, the guy is constantly climbing mountains, cycling a million miles, competing in an Ironman triathlon, just always doing something to hone his fitness.”

Also performing at Dream Machines will be world-class riders Julian Dusseau and Jesse Jolson.

What does it take to make it into the monster air of FMX like these four young men? John Borba said it best: “You need the memory of an elephant, the body control and athletic prowess of an Olympic gymnast, and the stone of a professional bull rider.”

In other words, don’t miss this event. Don’t even think about it. It’s going to be totally sick.

Three (3) 20-minute FMX stunt shows will be held at 11:30 am, 1:30 pm and 3:30 pm.
