Half Moon Bay Offers Resources To Help Residents Prepare For Rain

Heavy rain and strong winds are predicted in town for the next couple of days.

HALF MOON BAY, CA — As winter weather hits the Bay Area, Half Moon Bay city officials want to make sure the community is ready for potential flooding and other hazards. With heavy rain and strong winds expected for both Wednesday and Thursday, the city sent out the following info:

  • Register for San Mateo County Alert to receive emergency alerts.
  • If your area is prone to flooding fill up sand bags protect your property at the Half Moon Bay "self-help" sandbag distribution center (bags and sand for you to fill) at the Historic Train Depot below Johnston House 110 Higgins Canyon Road (for Half Moon Bay residents only).
  • Help keep storm drains in your neighborhood clear. This will help prevent backups and localized flooding in your neighborhood. Call Half Moon Bay Public Works Maintenance at 650.726.7177 for significant blocking. (after 5pm, call the Sheriff's dispatch at 650.726.8286).

Here's the NWS forecast for Half Moon Bay for the next two days:

Wednesday Afternoon
Rain before 4pm, then showers and possibly a thunderstorm after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce heavy rainfall. High near 60. Windy, with a south wind 32 to 34 mph, with gusts as high as 44 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Wednesday Night
Showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Some of the storms could produce small hail and heavy rain. Low around 52. Windy, with a south southwest wind 34 to 39 mph decreasing to 25 to 30 mph after midnight. Winds could gust as high as 48 mph. Chance of precipitation is 100%. New rainfall amounts between three quarters and one inch possible.

Thursday
Showers and possibly a thunderstorm, mainly before 4pm, then a chance of showers and thunderstorms after 4pm. Some of the storms could produce small hail. High near 58. Breezy, with a west southwest wind 21 to 28 mph, with gusts as high as 34 mph. Chance of precipitation is 90%. New rainfall amounts between a quarter and half of an inch possible.

Thursday Night
A 30 percent chance of showers before 10pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 45. West northwest wind 7 to 16 mph, with gusts as high as 20 mph. New precipitation amounts of less than a tenth of an inch possible.
