Ok, fine, let's entertain the idea that craft beer makers are obsessed with hops. Sure, selections such as Fresh Squeezed IPA from Deschutes, Hop Stoopid from Lagunitas, Hopsicle from Moylans, and the 8-block line around the corner of folks waiting to taste Pliny the Younger might, perhaps, give weight to the argument. And yes, I suppose the fact that there are currently 217 hop varieties in existence according to the USDA, a good number of which have been created in the last 5 years or so, could bolster the point a bit.
I hear it all the time from friends and family who aren't what you call, "hop heads" - "I don't like craft beer because it's too bitter". Even Slate had to chime in on what must have been a really slow news day. And to be fair, even I wrote a piece urging homebrewers to explore other styles.
Look, I'll concede that craft brewers love to produce the hop bomb from time to time. But lets stop for a moment and consider the following - nearly all craft breweries you can name make at minimum of 4 or 5 styles of beer, and at least half of those are NOT hop forward! Sierra has Kellerweis, Tumbler, Summerfest and Old Chico. Lagunitas has Brown Shugga and Little Sumpin. Russian River (the Pliny people!!) have an entire line of sour beers that have NO hop character at all!
Here's my point - if you're a Bud Lite person and you're always going to be a Bud Lite person, that's fine. However, I can guarantee the rest of you that if you take just a little bit of time and have just the slightest sense of adventure, you will find that the big bad craft beer world is very accommodating to your tastes! So go on and try some and don't fear the hop monster! Seriously, don't. He's one of my best friends and he's a really nice guy... but I digress... CHEERS!!
