PHOTO OF THE DAY: Pacific Tree Frog

A keystone species abundant on the San Mateo Coast

The range of the Pacific Tree Frog (Pseudacris regilla) is from Northern California to British Columbia and from sea level to 10,000 feet elevation.  They are abundant along the San Mateo coast and of "Least Concern" on the environmental status chart.

The Pacific Tree Frog is also considered a keystone species. As a result,  other species rely heavily on this frog's health for their own survival.

Pacific Tree Frogs grow to 5 cm long and change colors with the seasons. Still, they are prey for garter snakes. They have distinctive long toes and a black stripe across their eye.

Their call sounds like a "ribbit."

Work in your garden for a few minutes and I am sure you will come across these tiny critters.
