Possible Lyme Disease Case Reported at Water Dog Lake
Two to three percent of the ticks throughout the area carry Lyme disease, although testing indicates that rates are higher for certain trails in the Waterdog Lake Open Space.
Earlier this week, the the San Mateo CountyΒ Mosquito and Vector Control DistrictΒ reported to Belmont city officials that a Belmont resident may have contracted Lyme disease from a tick in Water Dog Lake Open Space.
According to Belmont City Manager Greg Scoles's Weekly Update newsletter, city staff is coordinating with theΒ District and signs are posted at theΒ trailheads warning users about ticks alongΒ with tick identification cards.
City officials say that itΒ appearsΒ that two toΒ three percent of the ticks throughout theΒ area carry Lyme disease, although testingΒ earlier this week by the District indicatedΒ that rates are higher for certain trails inΒ Water Dog Lake Open Space.
More information is expected next week from the Vector Control District, and crews will beginΒ small-scale spraying along the trailsΒ where they found a high numbers ofΒ ticks. Warning signs, like the one above, will be posted at Belmont trailheads.Β
The City of Belmont has been informing peopleΒ and assisting the District with its controlΒ efforts.Β
