Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay Seeks San Mateo Coastside's Volunteer of the Year 2015

The following was submitted for publication on behalf of the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay:


The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay will confer the fourth annual Service Above Self Award to the Half Moon Bay and Coastside community’s top volunteer on March 21 at the Magic of the Coastside community fundraising dinner event.

Members of nonprofit organizations who exemplify outstanding volunteer work to benefit the community are eligible for this honor, and applications are accepted through February 6.

Past recipients include:

  • Dr. Michael Klass, the volunteer Administrative Coordinator of the San Mateo County Coastside Medical Reserve Corps. He’s led recruiting and training of over 50 healthcare volunteers to respond to Coastside disasters.
  • Judy O’Leary, Director of Coastside Hope. Judy is “the heart, soul, and public face” of Coastside Hope’s Adopt a Family which serves over 365 families and seniors every year A volunteer with this organization for 17 years, she also mentors and trains other volunteers.
  • Eric and Alice DeBode, Kelly Avenue Catholic Worker organization.Eric and Alice serve the homeless and those in need by providing food, clothing and shelter. Eric’s volunteer team prepares a free community breakfast at the Coastside Lutheran Church twice a week. Alice has been instrumental in matters that affect immigration.
  • Sue Heckman, Coastside Adult Day Health Center. For over 20 years, Sue has been a tireless volunteer and board member of the Coastside Adult Day Health Center. She also volunteers with Our Lady of the Pillar Catholic Church and the Coastal Repertory Theater.

The fifty plus members of the Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay donate time and money to support the under-served in the community and around the world. The Club’s signature local cause is RotaCare, the free medical clinic for the uninsured in Half Moon Bay and the surrounding Coastside communities. The Rotary Club of Half Moon Bay is one of 34,000 clubs around the world.
