Photo of the Day: Fishing for Smelt

Redondo Beach is a popular fishing spot for catching schools of smelt that are spawning in the breakers.

Cast nets look like an easy way to catch smelt in the ocean, but you must stand in the cold surf and have a keen eye to spot the schools that are spawning in the breakers, not to mention the skill of successfully throwing a wide net.

Fishermen watch for birds diving into the water and seals in the waves as clues to their presence.

Here's a scene from Redondo Beach yesterday where a smelt fisherman masters the art of throwing a net to catch the small silvery fish that frequent the Half Moon Bay coastline this time of year.
