Sprouts & Shutters: New Bakery Serves Mud Pies, Clothing Store Sells Special Half Moon Bay Bracelet

OPEN: Crow’s Nest, 406 Main Street, Half Moon Bay

Crow’s Nest quietly opened last month on Main Street, a stylish retailer specializing in contemporary women's fashion and accessories. A grand opening party and open house is set for the evening of Oct. 3. A special Half Moon Bay bracelet, designed by local artist Kris Nations, will be sold at the store on that day with all proceeds going to the Half Moon Bay High School art department. In addition, 20 percent of sales that day also will go to the art department. Or, shoppers can elect to have 20 percent off their purchases. 

Opening: Montara Bakery & Café, 1400 Main Street, Montara

A little red café is opening up in Montara off Highway 1 next to Ocean View Inn in Montara on Sept. 23. Teresita and husband Michael Riis, El Granada residents, are the owners. They will serve full breakfast, lunch and brunch, supporting local, organic and non-gmo companies. They’ll also have seasonal pies, made to order cakes, daily baked goods, and commuter lunch specials. “We're bringing back the mud pie to the coast!” said Riis, referring to the Chart House's famous mud pies but theirs will be topped with a house made Hawaiian Sea Salted Caramel Sauce. 

Closed: Crab Landing, 260 Capistrano Rd., Half Moon Bay

After being closed for more than five months, saying it was remodeling and would open soon, Crab Landing opened for business under the new ownership of Albert Dunne and Heidi Franklin, joint-owners of Ketch Joanne, Sept. 21 2011. Sadly, the new venture didn’t fair well and the doors to the restaurant are shut once again. Who will move in? The owners of Flavor, Devin Grant and Francisco Sanchez, may make the move across the street but this has not yet been confirmed.
