VIDEO: Remembering Sion Milosky, One Year Later
See how the surfer who died at Mavericks was memorialized in his home state of Hawaii.
Big wave surfer Sion Milosky was far away from home when he died one year ago while surfing the treacherous Mavericks surf break here in Half Moon Bay on March 16, 2011.
Born in Kauai, Hawaii, and a resident of Oahu at the time of his death, Milosky's body was flown back to his home state.
While he was a day after his death on Mavericks Beach in Half Moon Bay with wife Suzi Olaes, friends, family and a group of Mavericks surfers, friends and family in his home state said goodbye to the fallen surfer with paddle out ceremonies at the Banzai Pipeline off Oahu's North Shore and at PK (Prince Kuhio) Beach Park in Kauai.

At the Pipeline, a big wave break regularly surfed by Milosky, locals gathered in a prayer circle on the beach, then paddled out in his memory. At PK Beach, the local community paddled out and surrounded a boat ridden by Milosky's father, Olaes, and two daughters Awakea and Suriyah. Milosky's family scattered his ashes in the ocean, and a helicopter dropped flowers on the water to the sounds of cheers from those below.
