Glads Sweep Three In Wagoner Classic

The Chabot men’s basketball team delivered three consecutive victories to triumph in the John L. Wagoner Classic.

The resilient Gladiators (3-0) capped the Classic with a commanding win over Alameda College, 80-62, as Glads’ sophomore star Zion Yeargin, the tournament MVP, led the way with 28 points, six rebounds and two assists.

The Glads, ranked 15th in the California Community College Men’s Basketball Coaches Association Preseason Top 20, also took hard-fought wins over LA Trade Tech, 74-70, and Shasta, 75-69, in the round-robin Classic.

Chabot sophomore Amani Johnson had 18 points and 10 boards against LA Trade Tech, Yeargin had 17 points and freshman Nate Stroud added 13 points off the bench. The gritty Glads rallied from 13 down at halftime to outscore Trade Tech 49-32 in the second half.

Against Shasta, Yeargin poured in 22 points and had nine rebounds. Johnson had 16 points and six rebounds.

Interim head coach Marquis Glenn was pleased with the team’s efforts.

“We played hard this weekend,” Glenn shared. “Learned a lot about ourselves, adapted on the fly and during adversity. Proud of this group and what the year brings, very excited coaching this group and a pleasure to come to practice everyday.”

He added the Glads are “willing to be coached hard. Willing and wanting to get better.”

Impressive freshman guard/forward Domonique Trotter and Johnson both had a double-double against Alameda. Trotter powered up with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Johnson had 13 points and 11 rebounds, along with five assists.
